One of the bestselling authors in the fantasy and horror genres, Stephen King is a writer best known for Carrie and The Shining. It is no wonder, since these books have been made into films that have gone on to become classics themselves. But few of us know anything about Stephen King himself, so here is a short biography that should get you familiar with both his life and work.
Born in 1947 in Maine, Stephen King was a child of the post-war era. His parents divorced when he was still very young, which is why little Stephen ended up spending half of his childhood in Indiana and the other half in Connecticut. Eventually he moved back to Maine, where he graduated from high school.
When it was time for Stephen to go to college, he didn’t go far. He chose to attend the University of Maine, where he was in the school newspaper and the student government. It was during college that he published his first work ever, a short story that he named Startling Mystery Stories. In 1970, he graduated from college with a degree in English.
After college, Stephen spent some time looking for a teaching position. Since he couldn’t find anything, he took up a job in a laundry and continued honing his writing skills. This lasted for a year, that is, until he got the position of English teacher at an academy in Hampden. That was also when he married Tabitha Spruce, who was also a writer.
The year 1973 was when Stephen got his first novel published. It was Carrie, a story of a girl that took revenge on her classmates and that soon became a big success. Stephen was finally able to take up writing as a full-time career, and in the following decade managed to publish a number of bestsellers, including The Shining and Cujo.
Some of Stephen’s books were published under a pseudonym, since he was worried the public wouldn’t react well to him writing more than one book per year. But since he soon became hugely famous, he was able to come out in the open with everything he ever published. Stephen King continues to be popular to this day.
